Notre Dame football held their weekly press conference on Monday, giving head coach Marcus Freeman an opportunity to speak to the media about the victory over Georgia Tech, preview their matchup against Navy this weekend, and injuries that the team is dealing with. With the Navy Midshipmen presenting such a unique offensive challenge with the triple option, practice time is going to be huge.

In order to simulate the offensive attack, the Irish staff is ready to utilize two different quarterbacks for their preparation. One of them is a name very familiar for Notre Dame fans, and should be a tremendous challenge to the starting defense this week.

“You’re asking me if (Tyler) Buchner is going to be the scout team quarterback?” Coach Freeman said with a chuckle. “He’s going to get some scout team quarterback reps along with Anthony Rezac. He has been the scout team quarterback even since CJ (Carr) has been out. Both of those guys will simulate the Navy quarterback.”

Irish fans got their first taste of Buchner last week since he returned to the program in a walk-on capacity this offseason. Serving as a holder on the field goal team, Buchner ran the fake and accelerated toward the right sideline to convert a first down. At first, people thought it was Chris Salerno who also wears No. 26, but it ended up being Buchner.

Now playing wide receiver with the team, a lot of people have been wondering when Buchner could make an impact with this Notre Dame team. While it will get undersold by most, Buchner serving as the scout team quarterback will be huge for this team. Having a former high profile dual threat quarterback serving that role is a pretty rare thing.
