Even while holding a 28-7 victory over the Army Black Knights going into halftime on Saturday, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman was far from satisfied. When asked about his team playing the violent and physical football game he forecasted prior to the game beginning, Coach Freeman had an interesting answer.
After citing several of the miscues, including a false start and missed field goals the final couple of plays before half time, Freeman made a much larger point. The scoreboard isn’t what matters to him.
“Who cares about the score?” Coach Freeman asked. “It’s about the standard we have to play to.”
Some of these instances can be coach speak at times, but for Coach Freeman, you can tell he truly believes it. In the biggest football games, it is these types of mistakes that have the ability to decide the outcome any given Saturday. This team seems very process oriented, and they are chasing perfection.
After the Irish lost to Northern Illinois in week two of the season, this Irish program does seem to be playing with a bit of a chip on their shoulder. We have seen Coach Freeman appear a lot more focused, and honestly, more angry. His team has adopted that personality.
Saturday was yet another example during the team’s 49-14 victory over Army, this is a team that has evolved. They aren’t just beating teams during this nine-game winning streak, they are destroying them.
Notre Dame is sure to be a team that still won’t get their due credit, but that could be a huge mistake come College Football Playoff team. This is a physical team that will be a very tough out. In a year of parity on an all time high, this Irish team has a chance to be dangerous once the postseason officially begins.
