The college football season is rapidly approaching and will be here before you know it. Getting through June and July needs to happen first, then it will be time for things to heat up for fall camp.

For the Ohio State Buckeyes, the 2024 season is all about making it count. The Buckeyes uncharacteristically returned a lot of talent that could have gone off to the NFL, as well as a great offseason of acquisitions.

Preseason rankings are always interesting and the Buckeyes appear to be in a two-team race for the top spot.

In On3’s latest rankings, the Buckeyes come in at No. 2 behind only Georgia. Oregon and Michigan are the other two Big Ten teams that join the Buckeyes in the top 10.

The Buckeyes are the undisputed 2024 off-season champions, but that won’t mean anything if Ryan Day can’t capitalize on an all-in season this fall. Ohio State is loaded after returning every standout off a Top 5 defense, plus adding the likes of All-American safety Caleb Downs and All-SEC tailback Quinshon Judkins. Interestingly, Day decided not to  name Will Howard the team’s starter exiting spring practice, and while the Kansas State transfer remains the likeliest option, Devin Brown and Alabama transfer Julian Sayin will continue to compete at the start of fall camp.” – Jesse Simonton, On3

Georgia is coming off of a season where they just missed the College Football Playoff, but they have won two of the last three National Championships overall. The Bulldogs have potential No. 1 pick Carson Beck at quarterback and talent all around him. It would be no surprise if it came down to Georgia and Ohio State in the final game.

The Buckeyes need Will Howard to be better than Kyle McCord was last year to help the offense reach its full potential. The running game is going to be maybe the best we’ve seen in a long time with TreVeyon Henderson returning and the addition of Quinshon Judkins. Emeka Sgbuka is the top wideout in the wide receiver room but Carnell Tate, Jeremiah Smith, and Brandon Inniss will all be key.

Beating Michigan and getting over that hump for the first time in a few years is a must for Ryan Day this season, after that, the Buckeyes will have to get through the gauntlet of the expanded College Football Playoff.

Ohio State last won a National Championship in 2014 and the belief is they’re going to have a chance to repeat that success a decade later. Getting past Georgia could be paramount in making that happen.
