Following the National Championship, the Ohio State Buckeyes were hit with the loss of DC Jim Knowles, who took the same position at Penn State.
There is no time to celebrate a National Championship win, as the Buckeyes now have to figure out things for the future. At the top of that list is finding the next defensive coordinator. Spring football will start in about five weeks and recruiting is ongoing, so getting a coordinator in quickly will be key.
Penn State announced Knowles signing to be their coordinator on Tuesday and one Buckeye confirmed what most people figured; the Buckeyes have taken exception to Knowles’ landing spot.
Ohio State freshman CB Devin Sanchez replied to the announcement post with the game date that the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes will see each other again. Just a few months after Ohio State’s defense got a big goal-line stop to beat Penn State, Knowles is now leading the opposing defense.
Sanchez is the most talented defender incoming for the Buckeyes and he is already on campus as an early enrollee. The former five-star cornerback is going to compete for playing time from Day 1 for the Buckeyes. Ohio State loses Denzel Burke and Jordan Hancock, so there will be opportunities available in the secondary.
Of course, Sanchez never played for Knowles but his post shows that Knowles’ decision to land with Penn State didn’t sit well with the players. If a player were to jump ship and land with a rival, it would not be looked at as a positive. The same should happen with a coach doing it.
A lot of time sits between now and Nov. 1 when the Buckeyes play Penn State. Feelings on the situation will ease, however, some Buckeyes look to have taken note of this big move.
Ryan Day answers the big question regarding him leaving Ohio State and going to the NFL
He isn’t ready for that.
