When he’s on the field, former Ohio State All-American defensive end Nick Bosa has a strong argument as one of the very best defensive players in the NFL. During the course of his seven-year career with the San Francisco 49ers, Bosa has managed to collect 278 total tackles, 91 tackles for loss, 64.5 sacks, 168 quarterback hits, and 13 forced fumbles. The 6-4, 266-pound pass rusher has also been selected to five Pro Bowls, an All-Pro designation in 2022, and was also named AP Defensive Player of the Year during that campaign as well.

A year after the 49ers were decimated due to injury, they were hoping for better luck in 2025. On Monday, the organization was dealt some tough news when it was announced that Bosa was going to be lost for the year with a torn ACL suffered against the Arizona Cardinals this past weekend. Unfortunately for the former Buckeye star, this isn’t his first major injury. Bosa dealt with the same issue back during the 2020 season, only being able to play in two games.

Bosa also suffered a core muscle injury that required surgery during his final season with the Buckeyes back during the 2018 season. While that shortened his time in Columbus, Bosa put together a tremendous three seasons on campus. He finished his career with Ohio State with 77 total tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 17.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. Bosa’s final season came during the 2017 season, when he was selected as an All-American player.

This is a tough blow for Bosa, but an even bigger one for the 49ers’ Super Bowl hopes. This puts a lot more pressure on rookie first rounder Mykel Williams to make a bigger impact as a pass rusher. Outside of Williams, San Francisco needs some contributions from Bryce Huff and the interior defensive line. With the secondary also having some questions, the absence of Bosa will be felt on every level. It will also put some more pressure on the offense to carry the defense a little more.

Quarterback Brock Purdy is also dealing with injury, although Mac Jones did play well last week in his absence. With Christian McCaffrey also having a long history of injuries, on top of others who have had similar ailments, this feels like a team that is cursed slightly. Injuries may have completely derailed their running window under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
