Ohio State football receives negative update on possible offensive coordinator candidate – and he may soon be out of their reach
The Buckeyes may not be able to go to the NFL to land this offensive coordinator.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are busy maneuvering the transfer portal — but there’s another key task that Ryan Day has to have on his radar.
Just like after last season, the Buckeyes are replacing their offensive coordinator following Brian Hartline’s jump to South Florida. The Buckeyes have hired Cortez Hankton to be the wide receivers coach — and an opening remains at offensive coordinator
A possible offensive coordinator candidate could be slipping away from Ohio State
It’s possible that Day decided to go to the NFL ranks to grab Ohio State’s next offensive play-caller. The Buckeyes brought in Matt Patricia to call the defense from the NFL and it’s worked out well. An NFL possibility that is out there for Ohio State is former New York Giants HC Brian Daboll — but the latest development around him isn’t a good sign for the chances that he winds up in Columbus.
According to Jordan Schultz, Daboll will interview for the open head coaching job with the Tennessee Titans. This is the first head coaching interview for Daboll since he was fired during the regular season by the Giants.
There are seven NFL openings and there’s a slight chance that Daboll lands one of those. The bigger risk is that one of those openings is filled by a head coach who wants to bring on Daboll as his play-caller. The 50-year-old former head coach is known as a good developer of the quarterback position.
Daboll played a big part in Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen’s come-up from 2018 to 2021 before he became a head coach. The Canadian native was the offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2017 — his only college experience outside of being a graduate assistant in 1998 at Michigan State.
The Buckeyes may make an inside elevation of someone like tight ends coach Keenan Bailey to be the offensive coordinator. There’s a world where Day is the play-caller for the Buckeyes again next season. Daboll isn’t off the board yet, but it’s trending that way with the NFL interest he is receiving.
