The Ohio State Buckeyes typically do most of their transfer additions during the winter portal window, though they were a bit late to the party this past offseason following their deep College Football Playoff run.
Ohio State had a clear need in the spring portal: improving in the trenches. The Buckeyes searched for interior defensive line help but were unable to land a true difference-maker at that spot.
However, they did manage to add a potential star off the EDGE. North Carolina transfer Beau Atkinson recently opened up about his decision to transfer to Columbus and play for Larry Johnson and the Buckeyes.
“I think just the level of play that everybody’s at here. Coach J is obviously one of the best D-line coaches of all time,” Atkinson told Eleven Warriors. “So just trying to be developed as best as I can possibly be.”
Ohio State returns Caden Curry and Kenyatta Jackson as their top two pass rushers, but the duo has combined for just seven career sacks in their first three seasons in Columbus. Atkinson, on the other hand, recorded 7.5 sacks last season at North Carolina as a sophomore, after notching 3.5 as a freshman. The production was evident, and bringing him in was a no-brainer for the Buckeyes.
“I think it was just time for me to go,” Atkinson said of leaving North Carolina, via Eleven Warriors. “I think I just wanted to play at the highest level that I could.”
Atkinson now has a chance to make an immediate impact in Columbus.
“Honestly, my favorite part of Coach J [Johnson] is just the man that he is,” Atkinson explained. “He’s a super strong Christian dude, and just teaching all these young people how to become the best people that they possibly can be. I just respect him a lot.”
