Ohio State’s next task in front of them is the Oregon Ducks. However, they still have to put some focus on the transfer portal and make additions for the future.

One position that Ohio State has notably been interested in adding a body at is running back. With TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins off to the NFL after this year likely, the Buckeyes could use a running back with some experience.

Ohio State hosted a running back transfer from the Big 12 over the weekend. West Virginia transfer running back CJ Donaldson Jr. recently entered the transfer portal and was at Ohio State over the weekend, according to Spencer Holbrook of Lettermen Row.

Donaldson is a 6-foot-2, 238-pound running back who entered college as a tight end at first. As a freshman, Donaldson had 526 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in just eight games. Overall, Donaldson was plenty productive on the Big 12 over his three seasons there.

During his sophomore year, Donaldson ran for 798 yards and 11 touchdowns. This season, Donaldson added 11 touchdowns once again with 734 yards. Donaldson showed this season that he could be a receiving threat a bit too with over 100 yards receiving.

Donaldson comes from Miami Florida and was ranked as the No. 52 tight end in the class of 2022. Florida, Florida State, Miami, and Indiana were other notable offers out of high school for the back with one season of eligibility left.

James Peoples and Sam Williams-Dixon are the only running backs with experience set to be on the roster next season. Bo Jackson, Isaiah West, and Anthony Rogers are all a part of the 2025 recruiting class. However, it is tough to rely on freshman running backs solely as depth. They may be capable, but that can’t be the only option behind two true sophomores.

Ohio State has shown interest in Alabama running back Justice Haynes and USC transfer Quinten Joyner as well. It is clear the Buckeyes are keying in on a running back addition, it will be interesting to see who it is.

Update: Donaldson has committed to the Buckeyes.
