Following their National Championship win, it was a clean slate for the Ohio State Buckeyes right away.

There was no time to celebrate, as players quickly had to make NFL decisions, as well as decisions on the transfer portal. On the other hand, Ohio State has been dealing with uncertainty around the futures of its coordinators.

Jim Knowles is off to Penn State to call the defense there and Ohio State will need to replace him. Ohio State will soon find his replacement and turn their attention to repeating their 2024 success.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Fox college football analyst Joel Klatt thinks the Buckeyes will again be a force in 2025.

“The national champs will look a lot different next year, there is no doubt," Klatt said recently. "But they’re still going to be an elite team, and they’ve still got two players specifically that I think could be the two best players on each side of the ball in the sport. [It is] hard to take a huge step back when you’ve got the best player in the sport on each side of the ball.”

Ohio State will indeed return their two best players on each side of the football in 2025. Jeremiah Smith was Ohio State’s top offensive threat as a freshman and he should do even more damage next season. Smith had 1,313 receiving yards in 2024. Caleb Downs will return as the best defensive player in America in the backfield for Ohio State’s defense.

The Buckeyes fell to Michigan for a fourth straight time in 2024 and beating the Wolverines in 2025 is something OSU must find a way to do. With the expanded College Football Playoff format, Ohio State was still able to go on to reach its big goal this past season. That was not only the case for the Buckeyes.

There will be plenty of differences for Ohio State in 2025 after losing a ton from a veteran-led team. Still, the Buckeyes are in a good position to reload and be very good once again.
