It has been a great couple of months for Ohio State and head coach Ryan Day since they lost to Michigan just before December began.
Day and the Buckeyes reeled off four huge wins after that disappointing loss to bring a National Championship back to Columbus.
Ohio State beat Notre Dame back on Jan. 20 and Day is still feeling the benefits of winning it all. First reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Ohio State is giving Day a three-year extension that is averaged at $12.5 million per year.
Altogether, Day is now under contract for seven years and through the 2021 season. The $12.5 million outs Day as the second-highest-paid coach in college football and behind only Georgia’s Kirby Smart, who is paid $13.2 million.
Prior to the raise, Day made $10 million a year and was the fifth highest-paid coach in college football. The 45-year-old Day became just the third active coach to have a National Championship win under their belt. Day joins Smart and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney in that department.
The only blemish for Day in Columbus is losing the last four times against Michigan. Ohio State’s head coach is 70-10 in six seasons in Columbus and that is a remarkable mark. Day proved he can get over the hump this season, just a couple of years after the Buckeyes probably should have beat Georgia to advance to the CFP Final.
This is a deserved extension for Day, who has been at work retooling his staff since the National Championship win. The raise of $2.5 million will certainly have Day feeling good. Ohio State has their head coach locked in for the foreseeable future after a huge season.
