Brent Venables could pull off something historic for the Oklahoma Sooners thanks to their win over Michigan
The Oklahoma Sooners could make history with a 2027 recruit thanks to their win over the Wolverines in Week 2
The Oklahoma Sooners got off to a hot start for their 2025 season this weekend when they took down the Michigan Wolverines 24-13. This win finally gave the Sooners and Brent Venables something they could hang their hats on after a dismal 2024 season, and it came right at the perfect time.
During their game against the Wolverines, the Sooners played host to the biggest recruiting weekend in program history, with nearly 100 recruits across the 2026, 2027, and 2028 classes descending on Norman for this matchup against two blue blood programs.
Several of those recruits were five-stars, including some of the top recruits in the 2027 and 2028 classes. One such recruit was five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, the number-four overall player in the 2027 class and number-one cornerback in the class. The Sooners gained plenty of momentum in his recruiting with this visit, and Dobson had some encouraging words for Oklahoma fans following the game.
Five-Star Recruit Could Make Oklahoma History
The Sooners have had plenty of impact defensive backs over the long history of their program, but Joshua Dobson could be a completely unique win for the Sooners. Despite this long history, Oklahoma has never had a consensus five-star cornerback recruit. Ever. They’ve come close with players like Gabe Lynn, who was the #5 cornerback in the class of 2009, but they have never landed a consensus top-flight recruit here like Dobson.
It’s easy to see why Dobson is such a coveted recruit, and he fits the exact mold the Sooners are looking for at cornerback. At 6’1, 175 pounds, Dobson has the length and size Oklahoma is coveting out of this room, and his track background is exactly the multi-sport phenotype Jim Nagy and the new front office are looking at in recruits.
In Dobson’s first two seasons as a starter, he’s generated over 20 pass breakups, including six total interceptions.
After his visit with the Sooners, Dobson sounded enthused about the environment and the type of defensive mentality Brent Venables has brought to Oklahoma.
““Man, it was crazy. Definitely, I could see myself playing there. The fans were insane. They definitely helped the defense out a lot. I see myself fitting well. They blitz corners, and that’s something I can see myself doing. They played some decent man coverage. I like what they do with their corners, so I can see myself playing in that defense. [Oklahoma] definitely at the top. I will put them right there in the top three. That was a great visit, environment-wise and just everything. I love the coaching staff.”
There’s still a long way to go in his recruitment. The class of 2027 won’t begin to sign for over another year, and Dobson will be one of the most coveted recruits in the country. Oklahoma will have to continue their play and stay hot on the trail, but this visit seemed to generate some much-needed momentum for the Sooners to make history.
