Sooners fans should be rooting for the Big Ten and Big 12 to fall apart to help Oklahoma boost College Football Playoff chances
Fans of the Oklahoma Sooners have an easy rooting guide to follow across college football this week
The Oklahoma Sooners are one win away from punching their ticket to their first College Football Playoff appearance under head coach Brent Venables. To do that, they’ll need to get through the LSU Tigers. If they do so, it’s likely that they’ll be hosting a playoff game thanks to their wins over the Alabama Crimson Tide and Tennessee Volunteers.
The goal now, beyond beating the Tigers, is to root for chaos across the country to help give the Sooners a better seed. Which teams should Oklahoma fans be rooting for this weekend to help secure their first College Football Playoff bid in years?
#15 Michigan OVER #1 Ohio State
A Michigan victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes would give Oklahoma’s already ridiculous strength of schedule a massive boost, which will matter when the committee is deciding how to seed teams at the end of the year. This would be the second-best non-conference win anybody has all year (A&M>Notre Dame being the first) on top of Oklahoma’s success in the SEC. The Game is as intense as it gets, and anything can happen in a rivalry game.
The Sooners would be one of the few teams with a win over a Playoff-bound team at that stage, something that will surely keep them ahead of teams in the discussion for hosting seeds, as well as potential to move upwards pending the results of other games.
West Virginia OVER #5 Texas Tech
Listen…as far-fetched as this one is, this is the kind of upset that keeps college football magical. Much like Oregon and Ole Miss, a Texas Tech loss would propel the Sooners up the rankings. Knocking the Big 12 down a peg would be a big help in keeping the SEC at the top, and put Oklahoma up at even the seven or six seed.
Washington OVER #6 Oregon
A Huskies win over the Oregon Ducks makes the conversation for Oklahoma to move up that much more likely. A two-loss Oregon doesn’t come anywhere close to a two-loss Oklahoma resume-wise, and the Committee would surely take note of that. The difference between moving up from the eight seed to even the seven seed is the difference between hosting Notre Dame or Alabama/the ACC Champion at home. It’s slim upset odds, but there’s still a chance with Oregon’s injuries.
Mississippi State OVER #7 Ole Miss
This one could be tricky, as it would diminish one of Oklahoma’s “quality losses”, but it would open up the possibility of moving up another spot in the rankings, especially if Lane Kiffin departs shortly after the game. The further up the Sooners can get, the better off they’ll be in the long run for the playoffs.
