In 2024, the Oklahoma Sooners had their first elite defense in years. Under Lincoln Riley, OU teams were known for offense. By 2025, Brent Venables’ influence was clear in Norman.

The defense that the Sooners put out on the field this past season was the best in the country. They excelled in nearly every defensive aspect. After a slow start with takeaways, they finished the season strong. Their defensive line led the nation, and their young secondary showed promise for future growth. Yet, legendary OU LB Brian Bosworth believes this unit can improve even more in 2026.

Brian Bosworth talks Sooners defense in 2026

“This could be a team we see on defense, with multiple All-Americans on that side of the ball, and getting back to what Brent Venables said when he first got here,” Bosworth said on The REF. “We’re going to build a dominating, suffocating, relentless defense that will kick your (expletive), play in and play out. It may not be the same 11 guys, and that’s okay because this is a team effort, not just individual efforts.”

The Sooners may not have the depth they had last season on defense, but they could be better at the top of their roster. OU started so many young players last season who will only improve by being in this system for another year, but also by developing under Venables for another year.

Guys like Courtland Guillory and Eli Bowen could be the best CB duo in the SEC, which would only help the defensive line and LB room. Kip Lewis is coming back, Taylor Wein will only get better, and they could also have the best DT duo in the SEC with Jayden Jackson and David Stone, too.

This defensive roster remains loaded, even after key losses. Multiple All-Americans are still possible.
