‘He would run through your face, facemask included’ – Cam Newton ranks former Oklahoma star as his top ranked five-star ever
Former Oklahoma star ranked highly by Cam Newton
The Rivals network recently put out their top 32 ranked five-star players of all time. The list was littered with some outstanding college football players, first round NFL Draft picks, and future NFL Hall of Famers. That experiment allowed a nice baseline for former NFL All-Pro quarterback Cam Newton, who put his own spin on the exercise.
On 4th and 1 with Cam Newton, the former Carolina Panthers signal caller released his top ten list. These top ten players were not only graded by Newton as high school recruits, but as college players as well. That scope led to his first selection, which was former Minnesota Vikings and Oklahoma Sooners superstar Adrian Peterson. Here is what Newton had to say about Peterson.
“Impact not only in high school, but impact in college,” said Newton. “The first person I am going with is Adrian Peterson. When I tell you he would run through your face, that is the facemask included.“
Calling Peterson a great college football player would be a massive understatement. Despite some durability issues during his sophomore and junior seasons, Peterson put together a legendary three-year career with the Sooners. In 31 games that he was able to play, Peterson managed to rush for 4,041 yards and 41 touchdowns. He added another 24 receptions for 198 yards and one score as a pass receiver.
After that historic stretch, including finishing second in the Heisman Trophy Award during the 2004 season, the talented runner ended up being selected by the Vikings with the seventh overall selection in the 2007 NFL Draft. It isn’t easy, but Peterson somehow outplayed that draft range.
The 6-1, 220-pound runner managed to put together a 15-year NFL career. During that span with the Vikings, Washington Commanders, Detroit Lions, Arizona Cardinals, New Orleans Saints, Tennessee Titans, and Seattle Seahawks, Peterson would rush for 14,918 yards and 120 touchdowns. He also collected another 305 receptions for 2,474 yards and six more scores.
After Newton announced Peterson at the top of the list, things got a little bit jumbled. He started rattling off A. and B. sections of several numbers, but somehow the numbers still didn’t really add up. The other players mentioned were Reggie Bush (USC), Julio Jones (Alabama), Eric Berry (Tennessee), Patrick Peterson (LSU), Tim Tebow (Florida), Derrick Henry (Alabama), Jadaveon Clowney (South Carolina), Trevor Lawrence (Clemson), Travis Hunter (Colorado), Percy Harvin (Florida), Tavon Austin (West Virginia), AJ Green (Georgia), and Sammy Watkins (Clemson).
That is quite the list to be a part of.
