On Monday afternoon, the Oklahoma Sooners released their intial depth chart for the 2025 football season, and a few surprises, or things that caught fans attention, were on there, and, Jaydn Ott may or may not be one of them.

One of those additions was running back Jaydn Ott, one of the best backs in the country. The former Cal Golden Bear is set to take the lead in the Sooners’ backfield and become an elite offensive playmaker. However, Oklahoma’s first depth chart has fans scrambling after Ott’s placement.

Don’t worry about Jaydn Ott

On Oklahoma’s initial depth chart for 2025, Jaydn Ott was listed as RB3 behind Jovantae Barnes and freshman Tory Blaylock.

Fans immediately began panicking, with forums immediately saying the Sooners overpaid for Ott or that he was overrated.

My (and the Sooners’) answer to that is: R-E-L-A-X.

Ott is the RB1 of the Sooners, there’s zero doubt about it. The reason he isn’t listed as the RB1 is that he missed three weeks of camp and returned just last week. Obviously, the Sooners are going to be cautious with his recovery, so he wasn’t going to be listed as a starter. I stated as much in my depth chart predictions. There’s no real need to expose him to hits against Illinois State.

This depth chart means nothing. It’s not a season-long depth chart. It says nothing because it’s supposed to not say anything. Five of seven team captains have “ORs” next to their names. They aren’t losing their jobs. Most of those are just rewards for players who had a good camp. There’s no point in reading too far into it because it will change within a week.

This is likely indicative of what the order of snaps could be for Saturday….or it might not. Don’t panic about how things read on the depth chart right now, especially when it comes to Jaydn Ott.

Barring another injury setback, he’ll be taking the leading reins in the backfield very quickly.
