Oklahoma Sooners kickstart potential program-changing recruiting class by landing dynamic playmaker who could solve key roles on the team
The Oklahoma Sooners secured the commitment of one of the best playmakers in the 2027 class
After starting off the Brent Venables era with three-straight top-ten recruiting classes, the Oklahoma Sooners have had a relatively down 2025 and 2026 classes. They’ve come close in both years, but haven’t pulled in the high-end talent necessary to shift their classes into the top tier of the SEC and country.
They’ve still managed to pull in key contributors in both classes. The Sooners are seeing tremendous returns from players like Michael Fasusi, Ryan Fodje, Elijah Thomas, and Courtland Guillory already, and the 2026 class figures to produce immediate difference-makers with Bowe Bentley and Jake Kreul.
However, they’ve gone all in on turning their fortunes around with the 2027 recruiting class. Both new general manager Jim Nagy and head coach Brent Venables have circled 2027 as their rebound group, and with the latest commitment on Tuesday, they’ve taken that first massive step towards what could be one of the best recruiting classes in Oklahoma history.
Oklahoma Sooners Land Commitment From Top West Coast Playmaker
On Tuesday, the Oklahoma Sooners kicked off the future of the program by landing the commitment of elite California recruit Demare Dezeurn. Dezeurn is a consensus top-100 player and the third-overall athlete from California, checking in as the ninth-best in-state player in the 2027 class.
Firing on his film will make it abundantly clear why the Sooners were in hot pursuit of the California native. Dezeurn is an incredible athlete. Right away, he’s likely the fastest player on the Sooners’ roster, and he’s only going to get better.
He’s a track star on and off the field. As a freshman, Dezeurn set the National freshman indoor record with a 6.789 60-meter. This year, he set a personal best 10.3.2-100 meter and finished third in the California State Track and Field Championships this spring.
On the football field, you can see that immediate speed right away. He mainly catches a lot of screens and underneath passes designed to get him the ball in space because the rest of the competition can’t keep up with him. However, it’s his work as a kick returner that stands out the most. As a sophomore, Dezeurn took three touchdowns to the house on kick and punt returns, and had a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as a freshman.
It took one visit with the Sooners this weekend to convince Dezeurn. Dezeurn was one of nearly 100 recruits who visited Oklahoma for their signature matchup against the Michigan Wolverines.
“It wasn’t the plan to commit this early, but when you get that feeling — like it is home — I couldn’t pass it up. The main reasons were the development they talked about, how they’ll develop me as a man and as a player. Another reason was the stadium atmosphere and the fans, they were so cool and welcoming. I got the feeling on the visit — that feeling was like I was home. It was an easy decision”
For Oklahoma, this solves two birds with one stone. They’ve been looking for a dynamic returner for years, trying out several options there under Brent Venables, with little success. The offense also needs to continue adding explosive weapons on the perimeter. By the time Dezeurn joins the Sooners, Deion Burks and Isaiah Sategna will have gone to the NFL, leaving a vacancy open on offense.
Dezeurn is just the start for the Sooners with their 2027 class, but it feels like he could be the tip of the iceberg that starts the ball rolling for Oklahoma to pull in one of their best classes ever.
