The Oklahoma Sooners did it, just when no one thought they would. Head coach Brent Venables did it, just when no one thought he would. Quarterback Jackson Arnold did it, just when no one thought he would—pure dominance, from start to end by the whole team, all three phases. But I'm not sure it can be overstated how good Jackson Arnold was.
Sure, he only threw the ball 11 times, but that was the game plan. And you know what, he completed nine of those throws. So, he did what he was supposed to do. He also led the team in rushing with 131 yards. He was great, and with the season he has had, he deserved this win.
I'm not entirely sure what Arnold has been through in his life, but I'm willing to bet he would say this has been one of the more challenging years of his life. He was benched, came back, and had a great game. People asked for him to be benched again, but he came back and had a great game.
He let everyone know after the game how he felt.
“That’s a game I’ll never forget," Arnold told the media after a 24-3 win over the Alabama Crimson Tide.
The way he talked after the game makes you wonder if he will be back next year. I think if a game like this never happened and the season went on, and they continued to lose games badly, he would not come back. That would be the writing on the wall because fans were upset with how he had performed.
Sure, the offense as a whole has been bad, the scheme and playcalling have been bad, and the injuries on offense have been absolutely wild, but Arnold hasn't played as well as we have seen in the past. I think had this score been flipped, and Bama beat Oklahoma 24-3, Arnold would likely be on his way to the transfer portal.
The way he described the night after the game, makes me believe that he would love to come back. It proves that there are brighter days ahead.
