Following the Oklahoma Sooners‘ statement victory over the Michigan Wolverines, head coach Brent Venables spoke on the momentum a big win like that could generate for recruiting. The Sooners finally had a cap in their feather they could use after a full year of negative recruiting, and it could go a long way in swaying the future of the program.

“There’ll be a byproduct of having a good night early in the year, creating a bit of momentum in recruiting. I think people will see ‘Hey, I wanna be a part of that, I can see myself there.’”

Just a day after the clock hit zero and sealed a victory for the Sooners, the momentum has snowballed into a tangible force on the recruiting front, leading to a slew of positive feedback and some very welcome news regarding a player who could be the future of the team.

The Sooners get great news for an elite 2027 quarterback

Ever since Ben Arbuckle took over as offensive coordinator of the Sooners, he has prioritized two quarterback recruits above the rest: Bowe Bentley, who has already committed and is part of the 2026 class, and Peyton Houston, one of the top quarterbacks in the 2027 class.

With two games of film of the scheme, it’s safe to say that Arbuckle’s appeal has worked so far. The Sooners were logged a prediction for Houston’s commitment over the weekend.

What makes this notable is that this comes from a USC insider. USC was long considered the favorite in his recruiting with Oklahoma dealing with some unknowns. However, Houston was part of Oklahoma’s massive visit list against Michigan, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence he has set his commitment date for shortly after that game (September 15th).

Of course, USC is coached by former Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley, whose whole call to fame is his ability as a quarterback developer. While the Sooners’ staff might not care too much about the bitterness between these staffs, I’m sure there are some in the building who might be satisfied with a potential ability to pull one over on Riley.

Houston, the number-11 quarterback in the 2027 class, could be the spark the Sooners need to turn their 2027 recruiting into one of their best in recent memory.
