When the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns joined the SEC before the 2023 season, many believed that the two couldn’t hang in the conference.

The Sooners and Longhorns entered the SEC in 2023 amid doubts about whether they could compete in the new conference. In their first seasons, the teams had very different results. Oklahoma struggled, winning only six games, which only reinforced skepticism. But by 2025, Oklahoma exceeded expectations, showing its growth with a College Football Playoff appearance, several All-SEC players, and participation in the NFL Draft Combine.

With college football in the offseason, speculation runs high, and lists are everywhere. ESPN recently released a ranking that further underscores Oklahoma’s fit in the SEC, reinforcing the narrative that the Sooners do belong.

Sooners have been the QB school since 2000

“Baker Mayfield has been voted the No. 1 college football QB of the 2000’s. ESPN has ranked the Best 100 QBs of the 2000’s, with SIX Sooners making the list, including Baker Mayfield at No. 1!

While quarterback success is a major part of Oklahoma’s story, its current status as a top-tier SEC team is even more significant. Their achievements today underscore their legitimacy within the conference.

When the All-SEC teams were announced earlier this week, the Sooners had 10 players. However, some really, really good players missed the cut, like David Stone Jr., Courtland Guillory, Kip Lewis, and so on. Still, that’s the second-most All-SEC players in the country, behind only the Georgia Bulldogs. Taken together, these facts prove they are worthy of being in the SEC.

To further highlight their status, Oklahoma is one of the eight best teams in the country and played what many called the hardest preseason schedule. They only lost two games, both to great teams in Texas and the Ole Miss Rebels. And they won games against some really great teams on the road. This level of performance is due to their SEC-caliber coaching and players. Looking ahead, Oklahoma has additional opportunities to prove its place in the SEC.
