2024 was a new low for the Oklahoma Sooners. Sure, they have had worse seasons, but it's been a very long time. And, it's been a long time since they had an elite defense, but and offense that was so bad none of it mattered.

Yes, they won six games and went to a bowl game, where they eventually lost to an academy school in Navy, but the six games they won were all on the backs of the defense. That, and some of their wins were just against non-power four schools that weren't very good. After two years like that in a three-year span, Venables is on the hot seat.

A big time season in 2025 would secure him his job. But, he has to keep preparing for the years after that as well, and that includes recruiting. The Sooners are off to a good start, but could be better. Landing a player who is expected to decide his commitment in a week would be a big deal for the Sooners.

2026 RB Jonathan Hatton expected to make decision soon

Jonathan Hatton Jr. is one of the best high school football players in the country from Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas. He’s a junior running back in the class of 2026, known for his size (6’1”, 195-215 pounds), speed (10.6-second 100-meter dash), and power. He’s rushed for over 1,000 yards in a season, averaging 9 yards per carry, helping his team aim for a state title. His speed at his size is what really makes him so special as a recruit.

Hatton is a four-star recruit, ranked as high as No. 44 overall and No. 5 among running backs in his class. Schools like Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Alabama, Ohio State, and Tennessee are now after him, with Texas A&M looking strong after hosting him several times. He plans to decide in a week, focusing on a school that prioritizes him and offers a shot at big-time football. And, Oklahoma does that, but so do the other teams that have offered him. He committed to the University of Oklahoma in October 2023 but backed off in December 2024 to explore other options.

Hatton’s a key part of Steele’s offense, setting up his talented teammates for success. but also carrying the workload when needed. With his skills and attitude, he’s on track to make a name for himself in high school and potentially college football. If the Sooners could land him, it would be a huge get for running backs coach DeMarco Murray and head coach Brent Venables.
