Brent Venables, the Oklahoma Sooners head coach, really values weapons when recruiting players. He likes guys that are versatile, especially on defense. That's why the Cheetah position is such an important one in his defense.
As for the defensive backs in his defense, he likes guys who have a background as a receiver from high school, that way when an opportunity presents itself to get an interception, they don't blow it. Venables loves versatility on offense, too, guys who can play multiple position in case it's needed due to injuries.
And, Venables may end up landing a guy who can do it all, on offense or defense. Well, at least he did in high school. In college he will likely play one position. But, it's good to know that he can do a bit of everything.
Earlier this week, the Sooners landed in the top seven for 2026 athlete Jacob Eberhart.
Sooners top-seven option for Jacob Eberhart
Jacob Eberhart, a four-star athlete from Kirkwood High School in St. Louis, Missouri, is a top prospect in the 2026 recruiting class. At 6'1" and 200 pounds, he shines as a wide receiver, corner, safety, and linebacker, with colleges eyeing him as a defensive back.
In his 2024 junior season, he had 42 catches for 795 yards and 15 touchdowns on offense, plus three interceptions on defense. His size, speed, and playmaking ability have drawn over 40 scholarship offers from schools like Alabama, Missouri, LSU, Oregon, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Ohio State.
Eberhart’s recruitment took off with 20 offers in January alone. In May 2025, he named a top seven of Alabama, Missouri, LSU, Oregon, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Illinois. Missouri stands out as he’s a local talent, coached by former NFL player Jeremy Maclin and mentored by his cousin, former Missouri star Markus Golden. His father, Jason, played at Illinois, adding personal significance to that offer. Eberhart has visited Missouri multiple times already.
Ranked a top-400 national prospect and No. 4 in Missouri by 247Sports, his versatility and skills make him a high-impact recruit. His college decision, still undecided, will be a big deal for the 2026 class.
