The Oklahoma Sooners are trending towards flipping a four-star running back with one of the coolest names in high school right now. Messiah Mickens, the Penn State Nittany Lions commit, really likes what he is hearing from Oklahoma’s recruiting staff, and there’s a chance he ends up flipping to the Sooners.

“I really like the coaches down there,” Mickens told Rivals. “The coaches have always been showing love. I’ve been down there in the past. It would be great to get coached by a guy like DeMarco Murray… His [Murray] message was ‘you have the ability to play early and make an impact on a team like this.’”

Mickens would be a great addition to the Sooners’ 2026 class

Mickens is a 5’10, 210-pound running back. Right now, the Sooners have four-star running back DeZephen Walker committed for the 2026 class as their only running back. So, they could really use another guy in the class with guys like Jovantae Barnes, Jaydn Ott, and maybe even Taylor Tatum leaving, as seeing how he can’t stay healthy, and he’s a pretty good baseball player from the sounds of it.

Mickens is the No. 14 running back in the country, and the No. 5 player in Pennsylvania. The fact that Oklahoma has a chance to flip an in-state recruit from Penn State says a lot about the level the Sooners are recruiting at right now. The Penn State is one of the biggest blue bloods in the country, too.

Sure, Penn State just fired its head coach, James Franklin. However, they obviously have still enticed Mickens enough to keep him committed even after a ton of their recruits have left. Mickens is thinking about going to Oklahoma over his home-state team, which is also known for developing running backs.

The Sooners’ 2026 class is currently 19th, which isn’t bad. Their 2027 class is No. 1 overall, and getting a 2026 recruit like Mickens could help that class get up near the top-15 in the country. Right now, they are on a roll.
