If the Ole Miss Rebels and Lane Kiffin don't beat Georgia this weekend then their playoffs hopes are gone. Priority number one is taking down Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs. Jaxson Dart will have to keep up his incredible play following his record-setting performance. Their best pass rush in college football will need to pressure quarterback Carson Beck all game. However, even if Ole Miss defeats Georgia they're certainly not guaranteed a spot in first ever 12-Team College Football Playoff bracket thanks to their losses against LSU and Kentucky.
What else would Ole Miss need to secure a playoff bid? Which team(s) do Ole Miss fans need to be rooting for and against heading into Week 11 action of college football?
Here are the top five games from this weekend that Ole Miss fans should keep their eye on as the Rebels look to earn their shot in the first ever 12-Team College Football Playoff field.
No. 11 Alabama at No. 15 LSU
Rooting Interest: Alabama barely beats LSU
Despite leading the entire game, barely losing to LSU in overtime at night against the Tigers, Ole Miss still ranked behind Brian Kelly and company in teh first College Football Playoff rankings this fall. That does not bode for their chances to make the playoff unless LSU loses again. However, it would potentially help Ole Miss' odds even more if Alabama just barely beat LSU. If Ole Miss pulls off the win against Georgia, that will catapult them up the rankings. But Alabama can't look too good against LSU. Otherwise they'll stay ahead of the Rebels.
No. 7 Tennessee vs Mississippi State
Rooting Interest: Mississippi State in a wild upset
This is highly unlikely given Tennessee's top five ranked defense and Mississippi State's inconsistent quarterback play (among other deficiencies). However, this would throw a wrench in the SEC standings, gifting Ole Miss with yet another two-loss team in their conference that they don't play this year. The messier the standings look in front of them the better.
No. 9 BYU at Utah
Rooting Interest: Utah upsets BYU in this rough rivalry
Utah and BYU have one of the most brutal rivalries in the entirety of the sport. They hate each other. Utah, while their quarterback play has been problematic, is still coached by one of the best in the game in Kyle Whittingham. He always has his team ready to surprise in meaningful rivalry games.
If BYU loses, that would all but ensure that the Big 12 only gets one playoff bid, regardless of who wins the conference championship. If BYU goes into the Big 12 Championship undefeated, but loses, that could send an undeserving bid-stealer to the playoff while also perhaps still getting in themselves. That's an outcome every single playoff hopeful team outside of the Big 12 (Ole Miss included) does not want to see. This is BYU's best shot to lose on their remaining schedule.
No. 8 Indiana vs Michigan
Rooting Interest: Michigan in an ugly win over Indiana
Indiana has been on fire against one of the softest schedules in the country. If they stay undefeated, or even finish with one loss it's looking like they're a lock for the playoff. If Michigan's defense shuts the Hoosiers down in an ugly win thanks to their handful of solid future NFL players that might push them out of the playoff discussion. Then when they get crushed by Ohio State it will become official.
No. 5 Texas vs Florida
Rooting Interest: Florida in a mind-blowing upset
Florida almost beat Georgia last week, despite what the final score showed at the end. Their quarterback DJ Lagway got hurt mid-game, and it was all downhill for the Gators. If he does somehow play against Texas the Gators are going to keep this game close. If they pull of the upset that gives Ole Miss yet another two-loss SEC team to potentially push past in the rankings if they beat Georgia this weekend.
