Oregon Ducks can make case for No. 1 ranking and Indiana can prove 2024 was no fluke with huge Big Ten win
The Oregon Ducks and Indiana Hoosiers are both 5-0 as they enter Saturday’s “classic” cross country Big Ten showdown.
Both quarterbacks, Dante Moore and Fernando Mendoza, continue to put up some of the most impressive numbers in the country ranking 5th and 1st respectively in passer rating on the season. Both head coaches are red hot in the win-loss columns, with Dan Lanning posting an 18-1 record and Curtis Cignetti sitting at 16-2 over the last two seasons alone.
Whoever wins this game will find themselves on the fast track to the Big Ten Championship and perhaps a first round bye in the College Football Playoff. Media members from A to Z Sports who cover both teams decided to weigh in to hopefully predict the outcome for what looks to be one of the most impactful Big Ten games of the year. The picks are in. Enjoy!

Both the Oregon Ducks and Indiana Hoosiers have played extremely soft schedules so far. The only team with a pulse that the Ducks played was Penn State, and they went to double overtime against them. The only defense that Indiana’s played is Iowa, and the Hawkeyes held the Hoosiers to just 20 points. Both teams are likely among the top ten in the country, but this is a real “prove it” moment for both.
While both teams profile with top 20 offenses and defenses, Indiana might have one weakness in particular that could cost them the game here: run defense. The Hoosiers surrendered over nine yards per carry to Old Dominion to open the year, and struggled in a few key plays there against Kennesaw State and Iowa. The Oregon Ducks have a special trio of running back talents who should take advantage. The quarterback battle should be fun to watch as well, but this is likely the game where Dante Moore’s elite arm talent, requisite mobility, elusiveness against pressure, and true field general skills prove once and for all he’s the real QB1 in the country. – Travis May, A to Z Sports CFB & NFL Draft Managing Editor

Oregon returns home to Autzen Stadium this weekend for a massive top-10 showdown against #7 Indiana, a program that has earned respect for its balance, discipline, and stellar coaching. The Hoosiers boast an efficient offense led by their veteran quarterback and a defense that rarely beats itself–the kind of fundamentally sound team that can frustrate opponents. But this matchup feels like one where Oregon’s athleticism and speed will simply take over. The Ducks are faster at nearly every position, and the Autzen crowd will make life miserable for Indiana’s offense. Expect Oregon’s relentless pass rush, led by Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti, to pressure Fernado Mendoza all afternoon, forcing hurried throws and potential turnovers. Offensively, Dante Moore and the Ducks’ array of playmakers should find their rhythm early and never look back. Oregon’s depth and tempo wear down Indiana in the second half. – Brentley Weissman, A to Z Sports Oregon

A battle of top 10 teams and two of the top QBs in the country between Oregon and Indiana has the chance to be the game of the week. Dante Moore and Fernando Mendoza are in the thick of it for Heisman conversations due to their strong play to start the year. Both teams have already picked up a win against a top 10 team this season. Oregon has an overtime win over Penn State and Indiana dominated in a win over Illinois. Oregon has a prime chance to show the world they deserve to be the top ranked team in the country and Indiana has the chance to prove doubters they are a legitimate playoff roster. I think Oregon could go up two scores early, but I expect the Hoosiers to fight back and have a shot at winning this game late in the fourth. As much as I want to pick Indiana to pull off the upset, I’m going to take the Ducks to squeak out a one score win at home. – Destin Adams, A to Z Sports Indianapolis Colts

This is a game that two years ago would have been a blowout, but the job Curt Cignetti has done is insane. It’s added his name to some potential Blue Blood job opportunities. He brought in Kurtis Rourke last year who led the Hoosiers to a playoff berth and a spirited effort in the first round against the national runner up Notre Dame Fighting Irish. This year he has a potential first overall pick in Fernando Mendoza. He’s got everything you could want physically from a quarterback, and has thrived this season. Ultimately, the Ducks are the best team in the nation. Dante Moore is also in contention for the first overall pick, and they have weapons at every position on offense. It’s going to end up being too much for the Hoosiers on the road, but this is one of the best games of the year. – Tyler Forness, A to Z Sports Florida
