The Oregon defense clearly showed up to play in their rivalry matchup against the Washington Huskies, playing a massive role in head coach Dan Lanning securing his first win against Washington in his tenure at Oregon.
To put the icing on the cake of an undefeated regular season, the Ducks defense tied a program single-game record by registering 10 sacks. It was a constant onslaught that showcased one of the biggest strengths of this Oregon team as they prepare for a Big Ten Championship game and, eventually, hopefully a run at a National Championship.
"Coming into the game, we didn't really think we'd have that many opportunities to rush the passer," head coach Dan Lanning said after the game when asked about the performance of his defense. "We were anticipating some screen game and runs to maybe limit the opportunities to be able to do it. We talked about taking advantage of the moments we did get, and I think once the score became kind of one-sided, I think that created more opportunities for us. So I'm proud of those guys for taking advantage of those opportunities."
"We've said it several times, but being able to play our best ball at the end of season, when it matters most — I think you saw that. You saw glimpses of that from our team tonight," Lanning later said. "You know, dominating field position, making some critical plays on special teams, offense, and defense. I think everybody can recognize college football is hard, right? It's tough to be consistent and to be resilient and consistent and win some tight games and have some battles throughout there. I think that really shows some of the character of our team."
Boy did they ever take advantage of their chances. The Washington offense trotted out true freshman Demond Williams Jr. at quarterback for his first career start, which certainly contributed to the sack total, but rarely were the sacks the fault of Williams. The Oregon defensive front overwhelmed Washington's offensive line, with multiple defenders regularly finding their way into the backfield.
The stars were out. Here's the sack final tally from the blowout 49-21 victory.
- Jordan Burch — 2.5
- Matayo Uiagalelei — 2.0
- Teitum Tuioti — 1.5
- Bryce Boettcher — 1.0
- Derrick Harmon — 1.0
- Jestin Jacobs — 1.0
- Jaeden Moore — 0.5
- Jeffrey Bass — 0.5
That is a lot of production from the pass rush. Burch, Uiagalelei, Tuioti —all are regular suspects in the pass rush department, and all showed up in a massive way. Lanning and the Ducks will now turn their attention to a Big Ten Championship game against Penn State with all the momentum in the world. For Oregon, who clearly has Burch back healthy and dominating, they have the type of well-balanced team capable of making a legitimate run at a National Championship.
Crucial Oregon playmaker cements his place in Ducks program history with record-setting performance
It was a cherry on top of a massive win.
