Latest news around Drew Allar makes Penn State’s loss to Northwestern that much worse
Not the news Penn State needed after three straight losses.
In Sunday’s loss to Northwestern, Penn State quarterback Drew Allar exited the game early.
His injury occurred with just a few minutes remaining in the game as Penn State was trailing 22–21 and faced a third-and-4 from their own 32-yard line. Allar didn’t see an open pass available, so he tried to run for the first down, but was tackled by Northwestern linebacker Mac Uihlein.
He remained down after the play and was eventually carted off, as backup quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer took over.
And after the game, head coach James Franklin provided an update on the quarterback, revealing that he will be out for the remainder of the season.
“Drew will be done for the year,” he simply told reporters after the loss. He did not go into specifics about the injury

Penn State has now dropped three games in a row, beginning with its loss to No. 6 Oregon. They then lost to unranked UCLA, followed by Northeastern this week.
Who is Ethan Grunkemeyer?
With Allar now out, it will be up to Grunkemeyer to lead Penn State for the remainder of the season. Grunkemeyer has played in three games this season, completing eight pass for 105 yards and a touchdown.
He was a 4-star prospect from Lewis Center, Ohio.
“We recruited Ethan because we’ve seen over time that he’s got a chance to be a really talented player in the Big Ten and nationally,” Franklin said about Grunkemeyer in Dec. 2023. “He’s proved that, over his entire career, and really over the last probably year and a half, he has really taken it to a different level.
The Nittany Lions also have Jaxon Smolik on the roster, who is expected to now serve as the backup.
