When it comes to the 2027 recruiting class, Pierre (S.D.) TF Riggs tight end Cooper Terwilliger is one of the bigger risers in the group over the last couple of months. Many top programs across college football have taken notice, including Penn State and head coach Matt Campbell. The vibes on the recruiting trail are high since Campbell came from Iowa State, and buzz continues to build for the 2027 class.

The Nittany Lions have made Terwilliger a major priority this offseason, and it appears that it is paying off. Both Steve Wiltfong and Greg Smith from Rivals have logged expert predictions for Penn State to land the South Dakota native. It would be a tremendous addition for a program that is in transition.

Heading into the 2026 college football season, Penn State is set to have arguably the best tight end duo in all of college football. Campbell brought Benjamin Brahmer and Gabe Burkle with him from the Cyclones, and between those two, they were able to haul in 63 receptions for 748 yards and seven touchdowns. Iowa State always prioritized the tight end position under Campbell, and everyone should expect that to continue in Happy Valley.

Terwilliger would be a tremendous piece for the future. He is an extremely talented football player with all the potential in the world. It would be a masterful early recruitment if Penn State is able to close this one out sometime in the near future.

Cooper Terwilliger’s recruiting background

Terwilliger is considered to be a four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, the South Dakota native currently sits as the No. 154 overall player, the No. 9 tight end, and the No. 1 player from the state of South Dakota in the 2027 recruiting class. Those rankings have continued to rise more and more as people have gotten eyes on Terwilliger this offseason.

As his recruiting rankings continue to rise, Terwilliger’s offer list is already bordering on elite status. Some of the top programs that have offered him so far include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, Florida, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Florida State, Auburn, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Arkansas, Illinois, Michigan State, Minnesota, Kansas State, Kansas, Wisconsin, UNC, Purdue, UCF, and Stanford, among several others.

As a junior, Terwilliger put together a tremendous season for TF Riggs. The 6-5, 230-pound pass catcher managed to haul in 38 receptions for 549 yards and four touchdowns. That is an average of 14.4 yards per reception, which demonstrates his big-play ability from the tight end position. The overall talent for Terwilliger is substantial, and a lot of really impressive programs are taking notice.
