Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko was available to speak to the media on Tuesday. The main topic of conversation centered around their weekend matchup against the Auburn Tigers, and the challenges they present. The Aggies currently sit with an 8-2 overall record, and will need to keep winning to have a chance at earning a College Football Playoff berth.
During the availability, Coach Elko was asked about keeping the attention on Auburn and not looking ahead to their season finale against the (3) Texas Longhorns next week. While Elko was giving the usual coach speak about the importance of not looking ahead to Texas, he unintentionally proved the point of the question.
“Our focus is single-handedly on Texas…I mean Auburn,” Elko said.
Now obviously this was most likely just a moment of misspeak from Coach Elko, but still made for a funny moment. As a coach, it’s hard to imagine he would look forward past an opponent, especially one from the SEC variety. Players are much more susceptible to that bad habit.
The Auburn Tigers have had a really struggling season so far, currently sitting with a 4-6 overall record. Those four wins have come against Alabama A&M, New Mexico, Kentucky, and Louisiana-Monroe. Obviously, that’s not the most attractive resume.
There is little reason why Texas A&M shouldn’t win, and convincingly on Saturday. It will be interesting to see how focused the team is, determined, and mentally prepared they are against the Tigers.
