Texas continues to move up in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, but the Longhorns have gone as high as they can go until No. 1 Georgia loses.

Texas now sits No. 2 overall in the AP Top 25 poll released Sunday after a dominating 31-12 victory over Michigan, which fell out of the top 10. It's the first time Texas has been ranked second overall since the end of the 2009 season.

Georgia is still viewed as the top team in college football, and you’ll likely get no arguments from Texas coach Steve Sarkisian. Better to the hunter than the hunted at this point going into your first year of SEC play.

But go ahead and circle that date on your calendar — Oct. 19. Georgia visits Texas at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

Oddly enough, because of the format of the entire season, Texas and Georgia could conceivably play three times. How? Once during the regular season, again in the SEC championship game (should both make it) and a third time in the College Football Playoff.

The Longhorns moved up to No. 1 in ESPN’s weekly FPI ratings and launched themselves ahead of the Bulldogs, who sit second. The Football Power Index is a measure of team strength meant to be a predictor of a team’s performance going forward, according to ESPN.

But Texas remained No. 2 in the US LBM coaches poll. Ohio State, the current No. 2 team, still sits behind No. 1 Georgia in the coaches’ rankings. Michigan fell to 16th.

“We’ve gone into Tuscaloosa and played and won. We’ve played in a Big 12 championship game. We’ve played in the College Football Playoff. So none of the moments should feel too big for us anymore,” Sarkisian said after the Michigan win. “And that’s just what I commended them for in the locker room.

“You know, this is who we are. This is how we know how to play.”
