The Texas Longhorns predicted to lose out on one of the most dynamic wide receivers in the 2027 class from their own backyard

The Texas Longhorns have attracted a lot of top wide receivers under HC Steve Sarkisian. They may be set for a tough loss in the 2027 class.

The Texas Longhorns have had a ton of offensive success since Steve Sarkisian took over as head coach prior to the 2021 college football season. That includes an impressive run at wide receiver with players like Xavier Worthy, AD Mitchell, Matthew Golden, Isaiah Bond, and Ryan Wingo. Pass catchers have wanted to play for Coach Sarkisian for obvious reasons.

That run of impact on the outside has also led to increased success on the recruiting trail, attracting the attention of some of the best playmakers in college football. While this Texas program will continue to do really well when it comes to wide receiver recruiting, they are going to always have the occasional miss, which is true of every program. It appears there could be a big miss in the 2027 class on the horizon.

When it comes to pure talent, you won’t find many better than Argyle (Texas) High School wide receiver Julian Caldwell. Considering that Caldwell plays his high school football right in the Lone Star State, you would hope that Texas would have the appeal to close this one out. According to Sam Spiegelman, a national recruiting analyst over at Rivals, he thinks that the Longhorns aren’t Caldwell’s top choice right now.

Here is what Spiegelman had to say about Caldwell and why the Oregon Ducks are standing out most.

4-star WR Julian Caldwell

Multiple programs are still dialing up their efforts with blue-chip WR Julian Caldwell this fall. Texas, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Texas Tech have made inroads with one of the nation’s best WR from Argyle (Texas) High this fall. Those schools are all playing keep-up with Oregon, which has been trending at the top with Caldwell since working out with the staff this summer. His fourth trip to Eugene last month reaffirmed their strong position with Caldwell.

“I always have a great time when I’m there and I feel like I’ve built a really strong connection with the coaching staff. The highlight of my time there is definitely watching the team dominate. I love the energy the coaches and team bring, and it’s a place I could definitely see myself playing at,” Caldwell told Rivals. “Oregon has always been super high on my list, so these visits are really just to continue to build on my relationship with the coaches. My family is aware that Oregon is far from home, but they feel confident that the coaches will make me a better player and person.”

Currently rated as the No. 58 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class according to the 247 Sports Composite ranking, a long list of impressive schools have been pursuing Caldwell heavily. Some of his other top offers outside of the Longhorns and Ducks include Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Penn State, Florida, Miami, Florida State, and USC among many others.

With Caldwell being a 2027 recruit, they have plenty of time to make up the ground, even if he opts for Oregon sometime soon. You can bet Coach Sarkisian and his staff will continue to pursue the Texas star, especially with how good the 6-0, 185-pound pass catcher has been so far in 2025. In five games played, Caldwell has hauled in 24 receptions for 503 yards and seven touchdowns. That is an average of 21 yards per reception, showcasing his big play ability.
