There's been a lot of talk this offseason about Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning and his decision to stick around in Austin despite sitting behind starting quarterback Quinn Ewers for another season.

Ewers toyed with the idea of leaving Texas for the NFL after the 2023 season, but he ultimately decided to return for another season with the Longhorns, pushing Manning to a backup role role for a second straight year (Manning will be a redshirt freshman this fall at Texas).

Earlier this week, Ewers joined RG3 and The Ones and he shared his thoughts on Manning sitting for another year.

Specifically, Ewers noted that he thinks sitting for another season is "the best situation" for Manning.

“I think that he (Manning) gains a lot,” said Ewers. “Not being from the state and coming in — and it’s obviously a little different. I think he’s got more time to grow his pride and love for the university. Obviously, he loves the university and loves the Longhorns, but kind of being able to sit back and watch, I think it’s different than playing. So him seeing what’s going on from inside, but also outside, I think that he can get a lot of intel from that."

“And then, obviously, another year to learn the offense and just get more comfortable within the smaller details," continued Ewers. "It’s, like, the best situation for him, I think.”

There's no doubt that Manning is eager to get his shot as the starter at Texas. And who knows, that could certainly happen in 2024. It seems likely that Manning will be asked to start at least one game for Texas in 2024 considering that Ewers has missed time in each the last two seasons with injuries.

Manning, however, doesn't have to be "the guy" this fall at Texas. He gets an extra year to mature, grasp the offense, and learn how to be a better leader/teammate. There's no downside to sitting another year. So when Ewers says that sitting is "the best situation" for Arch, it's not a suggestion that the young quarterback isn't ready, it's just Ewers pointing out that Manning will be better prepared to eventually be the starter at Texas because of the time he's spent in a backup role.
