When people discuss “Linebacker U”, which college programs develop the best linebackers for the NFL level, schools like Penn State, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, and USC are mentioned quickly. But what about Wisconsin?
Over the weekend, the NFL season originally kicked off. One of the main storylines was the defensive performances from former Badger linebackers across the league. Among the standouts were Leo Chenal (Kansas City Chiefs), Zach Baun (Philadelphia Eagles), Andrew Van Ginkel (Minnesota Vikings), and TJ Edwards (Chicago Bears).
Between those four, they combined for 41 total tackles, five tackles for loss, three sacks, two pass breakups, and an interception returned for a touchdown. While none of them were drafted before the third round of their respective drafts, each has shown to outplay their pre draft evaluators.
The best part about that group is that besides for Baun, they have been consistent players during the course of their NFL careers so far. If Wisconsin continues this trend, we are going to have to start having the conversation about who really is “Linebacker U”. The Badgers are putting NFL fans on notice.
That also doesn’t even include Pittsburgh Steelers star pass rusher TJ Watt, who was technically a linebacker while at Wisconsin as well. He makes his living on the edge, but the position listings playing in a 3-4 defense does blur the lines. You can also add in Jack Sanborn to have a little fun.
