Now that all official summer campus visits have concluded top four and five star college football recruits are setting commitment dates left and right. The recruiting calendar continues to accelerate as players are looking to lock in their roster spots earlier every off-season. One of the most highly coveted defensive back recruits in the nation, DJ Pickett, is set to announce his commitment next week.

Oregon, Miami, Georgia, and LSU are all still reportedly in the mix to land the five star defensive back out of Zephyrhills, Florida, but Steve Wiltfong (of On3) certainly believes Oregon and Miami are currently in the lead as we enter the final days of DJ Pickett's recruitment.

Pickett has over 40 FBS scholarship offers, has made at least four visits to all of his final four schools, and has been perhaps the most hotly contested defensive back recruitment in the nation. So where will this five star defender land? And what makes him so special?

DJ Pickett, DB Zephyrhills High School

DJ Pickett is one of the most ridiculous athletes in the entire 2025 recruiting class. His verified testing numbers have been absurd throughout his high school career, but Reel Analytics clocked him running over 21 miles per hour on the field as a junior last fall.

Pickett stands around 6'4", boasts incredible length, and could truly play both defensive back and wide receiver at the next level. In fact, Oregon has gone as far as discussing him being a two-way player for them, a la Travis Hunter (of Colorado). Pickett racked up over 1000 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns last year after grabbing four interceptions the year prior. He is a surefire first round NFL Draft projection who will completely change the team he decides to play for.

Predicted Landing Spot for Pickett

While Miami has been reportedly surging according to multiple recruiting experts and sites both of the SEC schools, Georgia and LSU, have had much greater on-field success and a more established track record of sending players to the NFL here recently. I'm hearing both are still very much in the mix. However, Pickett has been trending towards Oregon for quite some time now.

Dan Lanning just landed a commit from the highest rated player in Oregon Ducks history last week when wide receiver Dakorien Moore chose them on July 4th. The Ducks are building the best class ever put together in Eugene. Pickett has the opportunity to continue that build, sparking a potentially completely new dynasty in college football if he chooses to go out west. His final official visit was with the Ducks. And he's already seen them three times this year since February.

It will be tough for Miami, Georgia, and LSU to land Pickett, but all three could certainly use a long athletic defensive back who could potentially play offense too. If he does land with Georgia or LSU both of their recruiting classes could land in the top overall spot next spring. Miami, on the other hand, desperately needs a win like Pickett to maintain any hope that they're building towards what they used to be two decades ago.
