UNC makes strong statement about football program as Bill Belichick denies buyout rumors
Putting an end to that speculation.
Bill Belichick’s first season at the University of North Carolina has certainly stirred up some controversy as the Tar Heels currently hold a 2-3 record. Specifically, in the past week, there have been numerous rumors and reports that UNC and Belichick might be exploring a potential buyout.
However, Belichick put an end to all those on Monday morning.
“Reports about my looking for a buyout or trying to leave here is categorically false,” Belichick told reporters. “There’s zero truth to any of that. I’m glad I’m here. We’re working toward our goals. We believe very much in the process. We need to just keep working and grinding away and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
Belichick added that Michael Lombardi, who is serving as UNC’s general manager, has “done a good job.”
“It’s a learning curve,” he explained. “We’re all in it together. But we’re making a lot of progress, and the process will eventually produce the results we want like they have everywhere else I’ve been.”
ESPN’s Pete Thamel further reported that UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts was in attendance for Belichick’s press conference, which is “highly unusual,” and is viewed as a “visual sign of the school’s commitment to Belichick.”
How much would UNC owe to Bill Belichick for a buyout?
The Athletic’s Diana Russini reported that if the Tar Hells wanted to buy him out, it would cost the school a great deal of money. Specifically, she stated that “UNC would owe around $30 million if it wanted to buy out Belichick, Lombardi and their coaching staff.”
