It took until Day 3 of the 2024 NFL free agency frenzy but the Dallas Cowboys have finally been linked to an outside free agent.

By Wednesday morning, the Cowboys were one of only two NFL teams to not have signed an outside free agent. The only other team is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have signed big extensions for Baker Mayfield, Mike Evans, and Lavonte David. Meanwhile, Dallas has only re-signed long snapper Trent Sieg so far.

That might be about to change soon as the second and third waves of free agency are upon us, which is where the front office loves to swoop in and do some bargain bin shopping.

Speaking of which, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport is reporting Green Bay Packers running back A.J. Dillon is looking into the Cowboys as a potential landing spot. He's also considering the New York Giants and Indianapolis Colts per the report.

Wendell Ferreira, who covers the Packers for A to Z Sports, named the Cowboys as the best fit for Dillon earlier in the year, explaining that "Dillon is exactly what the Cowboys need: a powerful runner, even though not explosive, and he isn't expected to make a lot of money in free agency."

2024 A.J. Dillon contract projection

Prior to free agency, A to Z Sports projected Dillon's 2024 contract to be a one-year deal, which fits the Cowboys' desires for a cheap running back:

Dillon is a respectable talent, but the grim reality of the nonexistent market for Tier 2 or 3 running backs basically wipes his immediate earning potential. AJ is young enough to not risk getting suckered into a low-number, two-year deal before turning 26; recognizing his limited market in 2024 and accepting a slight discount to play for the right organization could give Dillion a chance to shine once again and set himself up for a more lucrative offseason in 2025.

Projected Contract: 1 Year, $3M, $3M APY, $2M GTD
Year One Cap Hit: $1.8M
