The Dallas Cowboys are making moves early with their in-house talent. Signing Michael Gallup to his five-year extension is obviously making many supporters of the team angry and confused, as this came by way of moving on from Amari Cooper.
However, said fear and confusion should fade after considering how the deal looks broken down, and how it affects the team's books for the future.
Considering it will only be a $4 million cap hit in 2022, this is a great value. And apparently experts from a famous publication agree.
The Athletic's Sheil Kapadia really likes this deal, regardless of what it cost to get there. He believes it's a steal for the Dallas Cowboys in many aspects. Even when considering the fact that Gallup is coming off an injury:
The Cowboys are bringing Gallup back on a five-year, $62.5 million deal.
Gallup is coming off a torn ACL he suffered in Week 17, but from 2019 to 2020, he ranked 22nd among all wide receivers with 1,950 yards.
Given that the Cowboys decided to trade Amari Cooper, they needed to add another pass-catcher to compliment CeeDee Lamb. Gallup is an excellent field-stretching option, and $12.5 million per year is a reasonable price to keep him from testing the market.
Grade: B
Money aside, Gallup and Dak Prescott have a noted history together off the field, as well as a connection on the field.
It's worth noting that in Gallup's four seasons, Michael Gallup has 151 catches for 2,407 yards and has scored 11 touchdowns in 44 games with Prescott over his career. This makes Gallup Dak's second-most reliable target in that time span behind only Cooper. The connection is there.
Regardless of how people feel about the deal as it relates to Cooper, it's a smart move from a salary cap perspective. Given what we know about the front office and the cap, they see this as a win.
Dallas Cowboys fans need to as well.
