Cowboys give key player a chance to earn back 'lost' money
More smart business by the Cowboys.
It's been a busy 24 hours for the Dallas Cowboys.
They traded for five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore and re-signed linebacker Leighton Vander Esch on Tuesday, and they decided to end their seven-year partnership with running back Ezekiel Elliott early Wednesday morning.
Oh, but they did even more.
Eight-time Pro Bowl left tackle, Tyron Smith, had his deal reworked to lower his $17.605 cap hit by converting some of his $13.6 million base salary into incentives.
Smith can recuperate that money by how much playing time he earns in 2023. The Cowboys could have cut him or offered him a pay cut but the incentives leave the door open for anything to happen.
Smith won't have the easiest time doing so with his recent history of injuries. He missed three games each season from 2016 to 2019, and he's only played in 17 games in the last three years.
Another key player for the Cowboys got his deal tinkered with also on Wednesday.
Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence had his contract restructured to free up an additional $8.89 million in salary cap savings.
Lawrence joins quarterback Dak Prescott, right guard Zack, and wide receiver Michael Thomas as players who have restructured their deals in the last week.
This move gives the Cowboys cap relief. However, Lawrence will count an extra $4.45 million against the 2024 and 2025 salary caps.
Lawrence signed a three-year contract extension in 2022 to help the Cowboys with the salary cap so this isn't new territory to him.
What will the Cowboys do with these savings?
After losing left guard Connor McGovern to the Buffalo Bills, the Cowboys need another interior offensive lineman. Also, they are still searching for another wide receiver to make their offense more dynamic.
All eyes will be on the Cowboys in the coming days and weeks to see what they do with these extra finances.
