After the Dallas Cowboys parted ways with Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore, he immediately found work with the LA Chargers. While the plan is in place for Head Coach Mike McCarthy to call plays this season, it still left a hole at OC.
It has made the job seem less attractive for some of the viable candidates available. Not being able to call plays, meaning the new OC's role in Dallas was going to be more around setting up the gameplan and organizing the scheme, rather than control of the offense.
It likely meant that Dallas would promote from within (again) to fill the coordinator spot.
Now it is done. The Cowboys have promoted offensive consultant Brian Schottenheimer as the new OC.
Schottenheimer, 49, is the son of former NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer and has been coaching since 1997 in the NFL and college. Spending time as an OC and QB coach at seven different locations.
His times as an NFL OC has yielded five top 10 offenses, including three in a row during his time with the Seattel Seahawks (2018-20). As well as six seasons as the New York Jets' OC (2006-11) during the Rex Ryan years.
With a number of the firings of the Dallas Cowboys coaches coming by way of 'Jerry guys' versus 'McCarthy guys', the elevation of Schottenheimer while McCarthy calling plays has the feel of a McCarthy move.
Someone who knows they won't call plays but understands their place in the offense.
The Dallas Cowboys still have other assistant roles to fill but have their OC for the 2023 season.
