Players across the league are signing massive deals left and right. From quarterback to receiver to the defensive side, mega contracts are being signed.
Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward is the latest player to cash-in. Ward, the No. 5 pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, inked a five-year, $100 million deal with the Browns on Monday.
The contract will undoubtedly impact the defensive back market. Whenever a new deal is signed, the market for that position typically resets. With the amount of talent at DB around the NFL, that should be the case here, too.
That is an important thing to note as Dallas Cowboys star Trevon Diggs will be looking to sign a contract extension in the relative near future. Diggs, the No. 50 selection of the 2020 draft, is eligible for an extension next offseason.
Trevon Diggs had a historic year during his second season in the league. The Dallas Cowboys defensive back led the NFL in interceptions, tied the franchise record for picks in a single season, and earned first-team All-Pro honors.
The arrow is pointing up for Diggs, who still has a lot of room to grow. Therefore, it stands reason to believe that the Cowboys star is among the next DBs in line to sign a big contract extension.
Diggs' older brother, wide receiver Stefon Diggs, recently cashed-in this offseason. The Buffalo Bills inked the pass catcher to a four-year, $104 million extension earlier this month. That is another factor in the equation.
The Cowboys have been burned by waiting too long to sign key players on the roster. Dak Prescott, who the team could have saved millions on, is a prime example. Dallas also overpaid for Ezekiel Elliott, Jaylon Smith, and others.
Rather than kicking the bucket down the road, the Dallas Cowboys would be smart to sign Trevon Diggs next offseason — assuming he stays on a similar trajectory. Otherwise, the Cowboys could be looking at overpaying again — if not outright losing the star defender on the open market.
Trevon Diggs is a unique player that possesses an elite skill — taking the ball away. The Dallas Cowboys should pay him as such. The price tag just went up.
