It's no secret that there's mutual interest between the Dallas Cowboys and Sean Payton. The breadcrumbs left behind are the size of dinner rolls.
Owner Jerry Jones has indicated that Mike McCarthy is the head coach "for now" but won't be forever. While a less strange and telling way, has had nothing but nice things to say about his former assistant head coach.
“Sean is easy and really pleasant to be around. He does things that really help ball teams, and help motivate players. He’s got that…he’s got it. That kind of natural instinctive leadership or spontaneous-type approach to life, his approach to his team, to his associates is a real asset to him. He makes the drudgery of the game, which is physical, and you need some lightness in there from time to time. And to handle the rigors of a football team, a season, or sometimes even a game, he knows how to punch those buttons.”
Sean Payton is about to join FOX as a panelist for FOX NFL Sunday, but his broadcasting career might be short-lived. Recent reports from within indicate that the interest between Payton and the Dallas Cowboys are VERY real.
The three biggest factors leading to a potential return would include a warm climate city, as well as roster and personnel decisions. Areas that no Cowboys coach has been able to fully control under the Jones ownership.
It would be an interesting change were the Cowboys to go the route of Sean Payton. Admitting without admitting they're sabotaging Mike McCarthy in order to clear a path for Payton to take control.
On paper, both coaches are very similar.
- Mike McCarthy – 15 seasons as NFL HC. 143-92-2 record (10-9 postseason). One Super Bowl victory.
- Sean Payton – 15 seasons as NFL HC (2012 nullified due to Bounty Gate) as NFL HC. 152-89 record (9-8 postseason). One Super Bowl victory.
Would a hire three years after bringing in McCarthy say the front office never really wanted him to begin with? As far as coaches go, going from McCarthy to Payton is a lateral move. Both have similar success as head coach with plenty of experience as offensive coaches.
If the Dallas Cowboys are serious about their trust in McCarthy, it's being shown in an odd way. One has to wonder if Payton were in fact brought in as HC, who would the front office be eyeing to replace him with down the line?
