In one of the more strategic moves during free agency so far, the Dallas Cowboys traded for wide receiver Brandin Cooks and only gave up a fifth-round pick this year and a sixth-rounder next year to get it done.
The Cowboys are still expected to add another receiver in the NFL draft. They met with Jaxon Smith-Njigba (Ohio State), Jordan Addison (USC), and Zay Flowers (Boston College) at the combine, and recently worked out Tank Dell of the Houston Cougars.
Another top receiver prospect can be added to the list as North Carolina's Josh Downs met with the Cowboys at his Pro Day.
Downs appeared in 10 games as a freshman but he was mostly a special teams contributor and only logged seven receptions for 119 yards and three touchdowns. His final two collegiate seasons were a lot different.
Downs exploded in 2021 and was named a first-team All-ACC performer after racking up 101 receptions for 1,335 yards and eight touchdowns. Last season, Downs went for 1,029 yards on 94 catches and tallied 11 scores.
The speed of Downs when he's in the open field and his exceptional route running stand out. He's very elusive and athletic and always seems to be open due to his craftiness and elite footwork.
Downs was primarily a slot receiver in college and can stretch defenses horizontally or vertically much like the aforementioned Cooks. If selected, Downs would join Lamb as slot weapons for the Cowboys and allow Cooks and Gallup to work on the outside.
The Cowboys have set themselves up to go in whatever direction they want to in the draft with the moves they've made during the first few weeks of free agency. Downs could go anywhere within the first two rounds so if he sides to the 58th pick the Cowboys should certainly consider him.
