The wide receiver position with the Dallas Cowboys got a huge upgrade when they signed Brandin Cooks earlier in the month for the next two seasons.
Dallas needs to look at longer-term solutions at the position though, and they're pounding the pavement heading into the NFL draft. On Tuesday, they hosted Houston wide receiver Nathaniel "Tank" Dell for a workout per Justin M of The Draft Network.
Dell enters the NFL with five years of college football experience, but not all of it was with the Cougars. He spent the 2018 season at Alabama A&M where he tallied 12 receptions for 364 yards and three touchdowns. A year later, Dell played at Independence Community College and racked up 52 catches for 766 yards and eight scores.
Next, it was time for Dell to face FBS competition.
Dell stepped on the Houston campus in 2020. Although the Cougars' season was shortened to eight games due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dell performed well. He registered 29 receptions for 428 yards and three touchdowns.
Starting in 2021, Dell established himself as a big-time receiver prospect. He was named first-team All-AAC after he compiled 90 receptions for 1,329 yards and 12 touchdowns. Dell earned first-team All-AAC honors again last season as he totaled 109 catches for 1,398 yards and an unreal 17 scores.
Dell's 29 receiving touchdowns over the last two seasons were the most in FBS.
Dell is a wizard with the ball in his hands in the open field. He makes guys miss at will, and his speed (ran a 4.49 in the 40-yard dash) allows him to separate from defenders.
Most view Dell as just a slot threat (logged 546 snaps there last season). However, during his career at Houston, Dell had 1,149 reps as an outside receiver as opposed to 976 in the slot according to Pro Football Focus. So, he provides the all-important position flex that the Cowboys covet.
The skill set of Dell doesn't stop there either. He also had 34 punt returns and 48 kickoff return reps at Houston. Simply put, Dell is a weapon of the highest order.
One knock on Dell is his size at 5'8" and 165 pounds. However, an undersized receiver who excelled in the NFL, Steve Smith Sr., gave Dell his stamp of approval.
Dell is a projected Day 2 pick, and he's certainly a name to keep an eye on when comes to the Cowboys.
