Tuesday was a busy day for the Detroit Lions front office. There was quite a bit of shuffling going on for them. The big move was obviously moving Alim McNeill to injured reserve. The Lions also signed former first round pick Tyson Alualu to their practice squad. He's expected to be a part of the Lions 53 man roster soon. Then the Lions made some other moves to which we detailed here.
With all this movement happening on Tuesday, you might think that the Lions could be done for the week. I don't think that's going to be the case and there's four reasons for that.
The first one is super easy. Bruce Irvin is not on the active roster yet. He did play on Sunday for the Lions and that went well, but he was only elevated for that game. The Lions are going to need to add him to the active roster soon. So there will be a corresponding move for that.
The next one is Quinton Bohanna. The Lions seem to like what they have there. They have elevated him from the practice squad for the last three weeks in a row and he's been contributing 20 or more snaps in each game. He also started the last two and he's been playing fairly well during that time. He's a guy I wouldn't be shocked to see stick around after this season.
The problem the Lions run into is that they never actually signed Bohanna to the active roster. He was elevated to the active/inactive list all three times. That means he's elevated just for the game and then goes back to the practice squad afterwards. NFL rules dictate that you're only allowed to do that with a player three times in a season. The Saints game was Bohanna's third game.
Three regular season games and two starts in a row would lead you to believe that some trust has grown there and that the Lions want to maybe keep seeing where this goes. Especially with McNeill out for at least the next four games. If they want Bohanna to play, they're going to have to sign him to the active roster.
It felt like Tuesday was the day to do that, but the Lions added Kindle Vildor to the active roster there instead. That doesn't rule Bohanna out though. There's always Saturday when the Lions and the rest of the NFL make elevations and extra moves before the game.
If Bohanna comes up to the active roster, someone is going to have to head down to the practice squad. I'm not sure who that would be at this time. With Vildor coming up, that sort of points to Steven Gilmore being the guy that could be sent down. Possibly Chase Lucas.
The other move that is possible is Michael Schofield being elevated from the practice squad. This is an easier move since Schofield has only been elevated once. The Lions can used his second elevation on Sunday against his former team the Chicago Bears.
I think there's a chance that Schofield could start in this one too. With Frank Ragnow expected to be out for this game, the Lions will move Graham Glasgow over to center and then the right guard spot will be open. Both Kayode Awosika and Colby Sorsdal have struggled mightily in that role this year. Schofield has 86 starts on the right side of the offensive line. Almost all of them came at right guard.
He was pretty good as early as last season with the Bears. He scored a 66.9 grade in his starts at right guard. His 75 pass block grade looks even better.
The fourth and final move will be Hendon Hooker. The Lions started his 21 day clock a week ago. That leaves the Lions 14 days to add him to the active roster. They very well could wait till the last minute or they could make that move on Saturday. There will have to be a corresponding move for that at as well.
With those four things out of the way, get ready for a lot of moves to come soon with this team. James Houston and C.J. Gardner-Johnson could be returning soon and there will have to be some corresponding moves for them. I'm not saying those will happen this week by the way. I'm just saying this team has a lot of moves to make soon.
Jared Goff is one of the NFL’s best deep ball passers in 2023
Boy that Jared Goff scrutiny from Detroit Lions fans never stops does it? I get it. The Lions are at a point with Goff where they're more than likely about to spend a ton of money on him and I get that fans want to see the Car Fax report on him before their team […]
