There is no question about it, the Detroit Lions have one of the best offensive lines in football. Maybe the best in fact. The one guy that holds this entire unit together is All-Pro center Frank Ragnow. He's the heart and soul of the entire unit.
The only problem is that he has been playing through an injury for the last few seasons and it's caused him to miss a handful of games in that time. When Ragnow is out, the Lions usually have to reshuffle their offensive line. They move Graham Glasgow into center and play someone off the bench at one of the guard spot and there's some struggle there.
As the roster stands right now, the Lions would have to do that again in 2024 becasue they don't have any center depth outside of undrafted rookie Kingley Egaukun. He could very well play a role for the team down the line, but right now they could use someone that could come in and keep the offensive line moving and not skipping a beat.
That player is former Dolphins center Connor Williams. The former second-round pick has been a starting center and guard in the NFL since 2018. He would be one today if he had not suffered a torn ACL in Week 14 of last season.
The ACL is an obvious concern. Especially since it happened not that long ago, but Williams is on track to be ready to play Week 1 and could return to the field for practices during training camp. Per Adam Schefter, Williams has been in contact with multiple teams. The Lions should be one of those teams.
The fit works really well for both sides. This could be a one-year deal with the Lions having some strong interior offensive line depth that could step in and start anywhere as well as help the young guys come along and Williams gets a year to prove to other teams that he can still play the game at a high level. At this point it's pretty unlikely any team is signing him to be their starter right away.
Williams is still just 27-years old. So there's going to be teams that are keeping an eye on him for the future. When he was healthy in 2023, he was one of Pro Football Focus' highest graded centers int he NFL. He walked away with an 86.5 grade on the year.
This is something to strongly consider for the Lions. As we mentioned, they already have one of the best offensive lines in football. This makes saying that they have the very best an easy statement to make.
