The Indianapolis Colts are set for a new era. First, the franchise hired Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as head coach. Then, the team selected Anthony Richardson in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Needless to say, there is a ton of excitement and optimism surrounding the Colts entering the 2023 season. With the schedule now released and officially set, the anticipation is only rising for week one in September.

Furthermore, the way that the schedule is laid out for the Colts, points to a big decision being made early in the year. That is because Indianapolis does not have their bye week until week 11.

Which means that the Colts could turn Anthony Richardson loose sooner rather than later. Had the off week been early in the year, there is likely a greater chance that the Colts wait until afterwards to turn the reigns to Richardson.

But the late bye week may force the coaching staff's hand. Because waiting that long into the year could result in a bit of waste, especially if Indianapolis thinks Richardson is ready to help the team compete.

The Colts open the year against the Jacksonville Jaguars at home. After that, they take on rookie CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans in week two and then the Tennessee Titans in week five. A strong start to the year would give the Colts a chance in the AFC South race.

Ultimately, this will come down to how Richardson looks in camp and the preseason. Indianapolis signed veteran Gardner Minshew this offseason, and Minshew has experience in Steichen's offense. Therefore, Indianapolis may not feel pressured to turn Richardson loose so early.

With that said, there is no better way for a quarterback to develop than live reps. Especially when the team is lacking an established starter already in place. Turning the No. 4 overall pick loose early in the year, rather than waiting until the bye week, would have the chance to pay dividends for the Indianapolis Colts.
