After weeks of waiting and speculation, it was revealed on Wednesday that the Indianapolis Colts will be without a key starter or the 2023 NFL season. Cornerback Isaiah Rodgers is expected to receive a suspension that costs him the upcoming league year.
Rodgers is part of a group of NFL players that have been accused of violating the league's gambling policy. Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley missed all of the 2022 season but has since been reinstated.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the expected penalty for Rodger, along with a handful of other players involved. However, there is some speculation that the Colts defensive back is out longer than one season.
In fact, Pro Football Network analyst Tony Pauline has heard chatter that the league may come down harder on Rodgers. Pauline suggested that some around the NFL believe Rodgers' penalty will be longer than just the 2023 season.
Which, of course, would make bad news even worse for the Colts if that were to come to fruition. Rodgers is just 25-years old and was expected to be a core member of the defense moving forward. But that would drastically change his outlook in Indy.
Rodgers was set to start at corner in the Colts' defensive backfield. He could have helped guide rookies Julius Brents and Darius Rush during their first season in the NFL.
Instead, Indianapolis will need to move on from Rodgers, at least for the 2023 season. Which could theoretically prove to be beneficial to both rookie defensive backs as they are thrown into the fire and learn on the fly.
But a suspension that spans longer than just the 2023 is far from ideal for the Indianapolis Colts. It will be interesting to see if anything else comes out in addition to Schefter's initial report.
