Matt Ryan signed with the Indianapolis Colts last offseason with hopes of being the answer behind center. Ryan won an MVP while with the Atlanta Falcons and played in a Super Bowl. There was hope that he would help get the Colts over the top.
Unfortunately, things did not as smoothly in Indy. Ryan, despite putting together some respectable performances, was benched midway through his first and only season with the Colts. Indianapolis also fired head coach Frank Reich.
The relationship did not last very long. Indianapolis cut Ryan this offseason and then selected Anthony Richardson in the first-round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Therefore, both parties have turned the page and are on to the next chapter.
Now, Ryan has landed a new gig. His new job will keep him around the game without taking the hits and going through the wear and tear that come with playing in the NFL.
He announced on Twitter that he will be joining CBS as an NFL analyst for the 2023 season. Ryan joins the likes of Tony Romo and Greg Olsen to go from the field to the booth in recent years. It's worked out well for those two.
Ryan does make sure to point out that his announcement is not a retirement post. Whether he's saying it fun or not, the quarterback is leaving the door open for a possible return to the gridiron.
It's a quarterback league, after all. Teams get desperate at that position, especially if an injury occurs to the starer behind center. So, it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility that Ryan gets a call to leave the booth in the fall.
For now, Ryan is next up in the recent trend of notable NFL players calling games in the booth. He will surely provide interesting perspective and analysis while breaking down the action.
