The Kansas City Chiefs have officially managed to get a head start on building their 2024 NFL offseason roster.

According to the NFL personnel notice for Wednesday, the Chiefs have signed four players to reserve/future contracts. We've been expecting some of these moves to come since the team hosted 10 players for workouts last week. Each of the four players signed to reserve/future deals was a part of that group of tryouts.

Players who sign reserve/future deals won’t officially join the team until the new league year begins in March. The players signed to these types of contracts are often looking for an opportunity after failing to catch on with a club, either as a draft pick or undrafted free agent.

Here's a look at the new additions for the Chiefs:

QB Ian Book

“A former fourth-round pick by the New Orleans Saints out of Notre Dame in the 2021 NFL draft, Book has started one NFL game during his career. He went 12-for-20 for 135 yards and two interceptions during that game. He was waived during the 2022 roster cuts and was claimed by the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent the 2022 NFL season and 2023 NFL offseason with the Eagles before he was again waived. He most recently spent some time on the practice squad for the New England Patriots.”

WR Jacob Copeland

“A wide receiver out of Maryland, Copeland went undrafted in 2023 and wound up with the Tennessee Titans. The 5-foot-11, 201-pound wide receiver posted 422 yards and three touchdowns for the Terrapins in 2022. He ran a 4.42 40-yard dash at the combine. He spent a month with the Minnesota Vikings early in the 2023 NFL season, then later landed on the practice squad with the Pittsburgh Steelers.”

RB Hassan Hall

“An undrafted free agent from the 2023 NFL draft class, Hall played collegiate ball at Louisville and Georgia Tech. He signed with the Cleveland Browns following the draft, but he didn’t make it through 53-man roster cuts. He had four touches for 17 yards against the Chiefs in preseason Week 3. He was re-signed to the practice squad, where he spent time until he was released in late September. He’s since been with the Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants practice squads.”

DE Jordan Smith

“A fourth-round draft pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 out of UAB, Smith didn’t make his NFL debut until Week 16 of his rookie campaign. He looked to be a part of the Jags’ future, but he suffered a serious knee injury that saw him placed on injured reserve during OTAs ahead of the 2022 NFL season. Smith sat out the entirety of the 2022 and 2023 with injury and is looking to jump-start his NFL career. He also played one season for Butler (KS).”

With the additions of these four players, the Chiefs now have 40 players under contract for the 2024 NFL season. They still have a lot of work to do to build out a full  90-man roster for the upcoming offseason.
