A recent article from ESPN’s Ben Linsey assessed the rosters of every NFL team following a wild offseason and identified the potential “x-factor” for the Tennessee Titans to succeed in 2022.
Linsey ranked the Titans roster at (a rather disrespectful) 20th in the NFL, placing them behind teams like the Minnesota Vikings and Washington Commanders. He cited the downgrade in offensive weapons for Ryan Tannehill as a big reason why Tennessee was so low on his list.
The article did, however, list a player on the Titans that could be the potential x-factor that helps the roster out perform their ranking. That player was CB Caleb Farley:

X factor for 2022: Caleb Farley, Tennessee's 2021 first-round pick, wasn't able to escape an injury history that was his biggest concern coming out of Virginia Tech in his first season with the Titans. Farley appeared in just three games before a torn ACL cut his rookie season short. He has the size, speed and ball skills to develop into a true No. 1 cornerback, but he has to remain on the field to do so.

Linsey’s assessment of Farley is nothing but accurate. Out of college, Farley was advertised by draft scouts as having “rare size and length for the position.” He also ran an unofficial 40 at 4.28, so there’s no question Farley has the ability to become a superstar in the NFL, but his injury history is concerning. It has prevented him from gaining essential experience on the field.
Farley is recovering from his second torn ACL, with the first coming in 2017 while he was still a wide receiver at Virginia Tech. Farley also opted out of the 2020 college season due to COVID-19, and now has played just three football games since 2019. That makes him the ultimate mystery entering 2022.
With Kevin Byard, Amani Hooker, and Kristian Fulton already proven playmakers in the secondary, Farley emerging as the true number one corner the Titans hope he is would be a real positive for the Titans defense. The front seven is legit, and having a reliable group of 4-5 young defensive backs behind them could turn the defense into one of the best in football.
I loved what I saw from the secondary in Titans minicamp. Now it’s time to hope that carries over into the season and that Caleb Farley is the x-factor some think he is.
