The 2017 Tennessee Vols coaching search will likely go down as the most bizarre coaching search in college football history.
If you're not familiar with the search, you can check out this great recap from SB Nation that does a good job of covering all of the unbelievable things that happened during a wild few weeks.
One of the craziest moments of the search is when then-Washington State head coach Mike Leach, who has since been hired as the head coach at Mississippi State, nearly became the Vols' head coach.
Leach secretly met with then-UT athletic director John Currie in California to discuss the job.
Currie was then summoned back to Knoxville where he was fired and replaced with Phillip Fulmer.
The feeling among national reporters was that Fulmer sabotaged the search so he could take Currie's job.
On Wednesday, Leach spoke to reporters at SEC Media Days and made a similar reference to a coup.
Tennessee ended up hiring Jeremy Pruitt after Fulmer took over for Currie (Currie is now the athletic director at Wake Forest). That move didn't work out, as Pruitt was fired this past January for recruiting violations that occurred under his watch.
Fulmer resigned from his position as athletic director when Pruitt was fired.
